I got the chance to ask Darren Dokken from the CXBL Western Division franchise Edmonton Prevail a few questions while Prevail has a bit of down time before the NAX Championship field layout is announced and the final training begins and the team puts all their hard work in the 2009 season up against the top CXBL teams in the race for the 2009 Richmond Cup.
First off what is your name and who do you play for?
My name is Darren “Dok” Dokken and I play for Edmonton Prevail in the CXBL Western Division.
How is the season going for your team right now?
Well I guess you can say the season is going right where we wanted it to. We have achieved our spot at the Richmond Cup and plan on taking it all the way to the final.
The NAX Championships are around the corner, who if anyone do you feel is the major threat to your team walking home with the Richmond Cup?
You have to respect all the teams that make it to Richmond Cup but I think the team to beat still has to be Edmonton Impact or should I say Impact Kids. A couple notable players are not on the roster but the majority of the guys are still there under the new name.
What have you guys been doing to get prepared for this event? Anything out of the ordinary?
After the last event, in July, we took a couple of weeks off and then we started back up with a two day practice and team building weekend at Darcy’s (Schlichenmayer) place. Paintball, UFC 101, a canon, a twenty person hot tub and camping out was a recipe for a great weekend. Once the league releases the field layout for the Richmond Cup I am sure we will be hitting the field to get things dialed in.
What about the CXBL do you guys like the most? The least? How does it compare to the AXBL?
You have to love the fact that you get to play a full x-ball game at 15bps in a well organized league. But the best part of the league has to be all the people that are involved with it from the fans all the way to the league officials.
The thing I like least about the league would be only being able to play each team only once. If you have ever had that close game against a team that you know you could beat, given the second chance, you know what I mean. As for comparing the league to the AXBL I really can’t since I don’t know much about the AXBL.
Does your team compete in any other leagues currently or plan to participate in any of the major US league closing events such as PSP World Cup or USPL Vegas?
As a team, Prevail, there are no current plans to participate in any other leagues. Some of the members do play in different leagues both in Canada and in the US on different teams.
What sponsors does your team have for this season?
The team is owned and sponsored by Prevail Paintball, www.prevailpaintball.com and is also sponsored by Dye.
We all know that the end of the 2009 is close, but where do you see your team going in 2010 and beyond that?
When the season is finished and the Richmond/NAX Cup is over then we will look forward to next season.
Something you love? Something you hate? Something that is a stereotype to Canadian paintball?
I love my wife and son. I dislike people that hate. Canadian ballers are a large extended family. On the field we will destroy each other but off the field we can be best of friends. A great attribute to have.
We look forward to seeing if the hot tub party and team camping will give Prevail the teamwork edge on Sepetember 18th - 20th at the NAX Championships at Bingemans Entertainment Center in Kitchener Ontario, Canada.
